It is not possible to hike only to the crater lake on Mount Rinjani as a short or separate route. Reaching Segara Anak Lake requires traveling deep into the caldera, and the only safe and official way to get there is through the full Summit and Lake itinerary, which takes 3 days. Even if a hiker chooses to skip the summit, the journey to the lake still follows the same approach from Sembalun on the first day and then continues down into the caldera on the second day. There is no direct or faster trail that reaches the lake without completing these stages.
The descent into the caldera is steep and time-consuming, and the climb back up to the Senaru crater rim requires significant effort. Because of the distance, elevation changes, and safety considerations, the national park does not permit a 1 day or 2 day lake-only trek. All hikers must follow the officially approved multi-day itinerary to protect both their own safety and the environment inside the crater.
Hikers who want to visit Segara Anak should plan for the 3 day route that begins in Sembalun, includes the option to summit on the morning of the second day, and then continues down to the lake and up to the Senaru side. Even skipping the summit still requires the full three-day structure, since the lake cannot be reached and exited in less time.
