What is the Torean Route?

The Torean Route is an alternative trekking trail on Mount Rinjani that offers a very different experience compared to the classic Sembalun and Senaru routes. It begins in the village of Torean and follows a valley system instead of climbing straight up the mountain slopes. This creates a gentler overall gradient, which many hikers find more comfortable than the steep approaches from Sembalun or Senaru. The scenery on this route is also unique, with river crossings, narrow canyon sections, waterfalls, and dramatic cliffs lining parts of the trail. Because of these features, the Torean Route has become popular among experienced hikers who want a more adventurous and varied landscape.

The trail leads directly to Segara Anak Lake, entering the caldera from a different angle than the standard summit and lake itinerary. The approach is long but not as physically punishing as the summit climb from Sembalun. Many trekkers appreciate this route because of its steady downhill flow when used as an exit after crossing the caldera. It is commonly paired with a Sembalun ascent, creating a route that climbs to the summit and lake before descending through Torean. This combination allows hikers to avoid the long forest descent toward Senaru, which can be tough on the knees.

Although beautiful, the Torean Route is not considered the easiest option. It is best suited for hikers who already have some trekking experience because the terrain includes slippery river sections, narrow paths, and areas that require careful footing. For groups with strong fitness and a taste for more adventurous landscapes, it offers one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to experience the interior of Mount Rinjani.
