How many days does it take to hike Mt. Rinjani?

rinjani trek duration

Most hikers complete Mount Rinjani in either 2 days or 3 days, depending on how much of the mountain they want to experience. Both options cover significant elevation and require good physical condition, but the longer route includes more time inside the caldera and offers a deeper exploration of the mountain. At Lombok-Indonesia.org, we offer both itineraries so trekkers can choose the experience that fits their goals and fitness level.

The 2 day / 1 night trek is designed for hikers who want to reach the summit of Mount Rinjani at 3,726 meters in the shortest possible time. This route starts in Sembalun, which sits at a higher elevation and has a more direct approach to the summit. On the first day, hikers climb from Sembalun through open grassland and volcanic slopes until reaching the Sembalun crater rim for camping. Early the next morning, the group begins the summit push before sunrise. After enjoying the view from the peak, the descent continues back to the crater rim for breakfast, then all the way down to Sembalun to finish the trek. This itinerary offers the most direct route to the summit, but it is also very demanding because of the steep climb and quick turnaround.

The 3 day / 2 night trek offers a more complete Rinjani experience. This route also begins in Sembalun, but after reaching the crater rim on the first day, the itinerary continues on day two with a descent into the caldera toward Segara Anak Lake. Trekkers can enjoy the lake area and the natural hot springs before climbing up to the Senaru crater rim for the second night. The third day involves a long descent through Senaru’s rainforest, eventually finishing in Senaru village. This option gives hikers a chance to explore the lake, see more of the volcanic landscape, and experience both sides of the mountain.

Choosing between the two depends on the type of adventure you want. The 2 day trek focuses on reaching the summit quickly and returning to Sembalun. The 3 day trek moves at a more moderate pace, includes the lake and hot springs, and ends in Senaru after crossing the caldera. Both routes offer stunning scenery, but the longer option provides a more relaxed schedule and a wider view of what makes Mount Rinjani unique. Let me know if you want separate pages for the 2 day and 3 day trek details as well.
