Currents in Komodo can be very strong in certain areas, especially during the rainy season when tides shift quickly and the sea becomes more unpredictable. Some famous snorkelling spots like Manta Point and Taka Makasar can have drifting currents that move fast enough to surprise beginners.
During the dry season the currents are usually gentler, although some sites always have movement because Komodo sits between two oceans. This is part of what makes the marine life so rich, but it also means you must follow your guide’s instructions closely.
For most travellers the snorkelling is safe and enjoyable because we choose locations based on the daily conditions. If currents are stronger than usual, we simply move to calmer spots. Even in the rainy season you can still snorkel, you just need to stay close to the boat and follow the guide at all times.
