What is the difference between Komodo resorts and liveaboards?

There are actually no resorts inside Komodo National Park, so the only way to stay within the park is on a liveaboard boat. All islands in the national park are protected and do not allow hotels, guesthouses or overnight land accommodations. This keeps the environment natural and ensures that Komodo dragons and other wildlife remain undisturbed.

When travellers mention “Komodo resorts,” they usually mean the hotels and villas in Labuan Bajo, which is the town on Flores where all cruises depart. These resorts are outside the park and are used only before or after your trip. Staying in Labuan Bajo is comfortable, but you will not wake up inside the national park or have early access to sunrise hikes like you would from a boat.

Liveaboards are the true overnight experience for Komodo. They allow you to sleep in private cabins, enjoy meals on deck and anchor in quiet bays each night. This makes sunrise at Padar, early dragon sightings and crowd free snorkelling possible. If you want to be surrounded by nature and enjoy the national park fully, a liveaboard is the only way to stay overnight inside the protected area.
