What is the difference between Senaru and Sembalun routes?

The Senaru and Sembalun routes are the two main gateways to Mount Rinjani, and each offers a very different style of trek. The Sembalun route is known for being the most direct path to the summit. It begins on open savanna terrain with wide views of the surrounding hills and slowly gains elevation toward the Sembalun crater rim. This route has a long, gradual start, followed by a steep final climb to the rim. From there, hikers push for the summit in the early morning and return the same way if doing the two day trek. Sembalun is the preferred starting point for anyone focused on reaching the peak because it offers the easiest access to the summit compared to any other entry point.

The Senaru route is very different and begins inside a dense tropical forest. The trail climbs steadily through shaded jungle, offering cooler temperatures and a more sheltered environment. This route does not lead directly to the summit. Instead, it reaches the Senaru crater rim, one of the best viewpoints on the mountain, overlooking Segara Anak Lake and the Barujari volcano. Senaru is the classic entry point for the crater rim trek and is a common finishing point for longer itineraries that begin in Sembalun and cross the caldera.

The main difference between the two routes is their purpose. Sembalun is for summit-focused trekkers, providing the fastest access to the peak. Senaru is for crater rim views and forest trekking, offering a more relaxed and shaded hike without the extreme steepness of the summit trail. When combined in a longer itinerary such as the summit and lake trek, hikers ascend from Sembalun and exit through the Senaru forest, experiencing the best of both sides of Mount Rinjani.
