Are reef safe sunscreens required in Komodo?

Reef safe sunscreen is not required in Komodo National Park, but it is highly recommended if you want to reduce your impact on the marine environment. The waters of Komodo are home to healthy coral reefs, turtles, reef sharks, and a huge variety of fish. Traditional sunscreens often contain chemicals that can harm coral over time, especially in heavily visited snorkelling spots. Using reef safe sunscreen is a simple way to help protect the ecosystem while enjoying the water.

Even though it is not mandatory, many travellers choose to use reef friendly products because they are better for the ocean and usually gentle on the skin. They work well for long hours spent snorkelling or relaxing on deck. Since the sun in Komodo can be intense, having a good sunscreen is important no matter which type you prefer.

If you do not have reef safe sunscreen, you can still snorkel and swim without any issue. It is completely optional. Some guests also prefer to wear long sleeve swim shirts or rash guards which provide sun protection without needing as much sunscreen. Our boats often see a mix of both approaches. The most important thing is that you stay protected from the sun and enjoy your time in Komodo comfortably.
