When is the best time to see manta rays in Komodo?

Best Time to Visit Komodo, Komodo Island, Komodo National Park, Komodo Tours, Labuan Bajo, Manta Point

Manta rays can be seen in Komodo all year, but the best chance to encounter them is during the dry season from roughly May to September. During these months the sea is usually calmer, visibility is clearer, and plankton levels create ideal feeding conditions for mantas. Sites like Manta Point and Mawan often have multiple rays gliding close to the surface, giving snorkellers and divers unforgettable encounters.

You can still see mantas outside the peak months, especially around the transition periods in April and October. These shoulder seasons often bring a mix of good weather and nutrient rich water, which can attract large groups of mantas. The rainy season from December to March sometimes brings choppier seas and lower visibility, although occasional manta sightings still happen when conditions allow.

Our team monitors weather, tides and local reports each morning so we know when manta sightings are strongest. When conditions are good, we plan the route to reach Manta Point at the best time of day so guests have the highest chance of seeing them. Even on days when mantas move deeper, the surrounding reefs remain beautiful for snorkelling.
