A good Komodo liveaboard should carry a full range of safety equipment to ensure a smooth and secure trip. At minimum, every boat needs a complete set of life jackets for all passengers, life rings, fire extinguishers, and a first aid kit. These items must be stored in accessible places where the crew can reach them quickly if needed. Well maintained equipment is a strong sign that the operator takes safety seriously.
In addition to basic gear, proper navigation and communication tools are essential. A reliable marine radio, GPS, depth sounder, and navigation lights allow the captain to travel safely during changing weather and visibility. Many phinisi boats also carry backup power sources and emergency anchor gear. This ensures the boat stays stable even if the engine or generator encounters a problem.
Modern Komodo boats should also have an emergency dinghy or tender boat. This is used for island drop offs, snorkelling sessions, and any situation that requires fast access to shore or shallow areas. The crew should conduct a safety briefing at the start of the trip so guests know where everything is located. On our boats, these checks are routine and part of what keeps each journey safe, calm, and well organised.
