What should I do if a Komodo dragon gets too close?

Komodo Island, Komodo National Park, Komodo Tours, Labuan Bajo

If a Komodo dragon gets too close, the most important thing is to stay calm and back away slowly. Do not run or make sudden movements, because quick actions can trigger the dragon’s curiosity or cause it to follow you. Move steadily and keep your eyes on the animal while increasing the distance. Dragons usually lose interest once you create space and show you are not a threat.

During guided tours, the ranger will immediately step in if a dragon approaches too closely. Rangers carry long wooden sticks and know exactly how to position themselves between visitors and the animal. They will give clear instructions such as stopping, stepping back, or changing direction. Always follow their voice first, since they understand the dragons’ behaviour and their comfort zones.

If you are taking photos, avoid crouching or lying down, because it lowers your body height and can make the dragon approach out of curiosity. Stay standing and alert. Never try to circle around a dragon for a better angle, and never attempt to touch or feed them.

In almost every situation, following the ranger’s guidance and backing away slowly is all you need to do. Komodo dragons are used to visitors on the official trails, and close encounters rarely become dangerous when guests stay calm, give space, and listen to the ranger’s instructions.
