What marine life can I see in Komodo besides mantas?

Komodo National Park is one of the richest marine environments in the world, so even without manta rays the underwater life is incredible. Snorkellers and divers regularly see sea turtles, reef sharks, cuttlefish, and huge schools of tropical fish. The shallow reefs are packed with clownfish, angelfish, parrotfish and bright coral gardens that make every stop feel like swimming in an aquarium. Many guests are surprised by how much they can see from only a few meters underwater.

Komodo is also home to larger species such as eagle rays, bumphead parrotfish, napoleon wrasse and giant trevally. These fish often cruise along the drop offs and cleaning stations where currents bring plenty of nutrients. Even on calmer snorkelling sites, it is common to spot turtles resting or grazing on seagrass beds. Reef sharks are usually small blacktip or whitetip sharks that are harmless and shy around people.

Macro lovers will also enjoy Komodo. The park is full of colourful nudibranchs, shrimp, pipefish and other tiny creatures that are exciting to photograph. Healthy coral walls make these little animals easy to find for those who enjoy slow snorkelling along the reef. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver, Komodo offers so much variety that every swim feels different.

On our cruises, we choose specific snorkel locations based on weather, tides and visibility so guests experience the best marine life possible each day.
